Beautiful plump earthenware vase with a lightly powdered gold-tinged green glaze. The enamel decoration of thistles is raised, creating a textured effect. The vase bears the signature of Clément Massier (1845-1917) - Golfe Juan. Period: Art Nouveau. Height: 32.5 cm. In very good condition.
After initially establishing his workshop in Vallauris, Clément Massier settled in Golfe-Juan in 1883, a favored stop for tourist clientele. He also played a key role in founding a School of Fine Arts in Vallauris aimed at teaching drawing to the workers in ceramic studios.
Starting from 1886, he developed significant and high-quality lustrous ceramics, collaborating with brilliant associates. He elevated a traditional technique to new heights and initiated a true industrial and artistic revolution that decisively breathed new life into ceramic production in Vallauris.
